The Ramblings and Misadventures of a Wayward Gentleman

MarkGable’s Super Special Gang

with 164 comments

Taking a leaf from my good pal, the dame to end all dames, Carole Irene, I decided to make my own “clique” of classic movie actors. Only we would be a gang, and not a sissy clique 😉
Apologies to Carole Irene for “politely pilfering” her original idea. Imitation is the finest form of flattery after all 😛

The Leader- Clark Gable

He wasn’t called “The King” for nothing! He had a natural dominance and a very imposing presence. The type of guy that would walk into a room and everyone would take notice. Apparently Gabe was quite adventurous in his schooldays, and this spirit of adventure carried on throughout his life. He dominated the Hollywood box office for years, so it’s only natural that he’d become the de facto leader of our little gang!

The Muscle- John Wayne

Being a gang of rough ‘n’ ready boys, we’d doubtless have encounters with rival gangs from the other side of town. So who better to back us up than the roughest, readiest fella of ’em all: The Duke. The guy was 6’4 and about 280lb of solid muscle and there are many anecdotes of The Duke flooring guys with a single punch. John Wayne would have our backs in any scrape! He’d also be the type who everyone is scared of when drunk 😉

The Pretty Boy- Cary Grant

Even people who don’t like classic movies seem to know who Cary Grant is. And chances are if they’re female, they’ll talk about him with love-struck eyes. Girls my own age still think he’s “gorgeous”. So who else could fill the role of the group’s pretty boy, the one who always seems to have a different date every night and whose success with the opposite sex is guaranteed. Most of the gang will likely be jealous, and thus suspect Cary of being queer 😛

The Goody Goody- James Stewart

Jimmy Stewart was just so good! I’ve never heard of him ruffling anyone’s feathers, everyone adored him and he was just an all-round nice guy! He’d be the conscience of the group, always hovering behind us and offering advice. Can’t you just picture him as being the one saying “Gee whizz fellas, I’m uh, I’m not so sure that’s such a great idea!”? Others would think he’s a square, but all the gang would love him!

The Funny One- Bob Hope

Bob Hope is the funniest man to draw breath. There I said it. Unlike modern comedians, Hope never railed against anything or anyone, he was never malign and he was consistently hilarious for 80 years. He’d be the class clown, always ready to offer a wise-crack in any situation. More importantly, as the Funny One, he’d be able to defuse tense situations with his perfect comic timing. Oh, and he’d keep us constantly clutching our sides!

The Over Dramatic One- Laurence Olivier

A lot of people consider Lord Olly to be the greatest actor ever. But anyone who has seen ANY of his films will know just how darn serious he was! It’s been said that if he smiled, parts of his face would crack and fall off. He seems more than qualified to be the one in any group that would bemoan the smallest of inconveniences, quote Shakespeare, and guilt trip the rest of the gang into attending all the school plays just to see him in it.

The Rebel- Errol Flynn

Forget all these pansy wannabes in today’s cinema, Errol was THE original Hollywood Bad boy! He took his swashbuckling roles straight from the screen and made them reality. Errol would be the one in the gang who brings along his father’s alcohol in his drink bottle to share during breaks. The one who sits at the back of the class drawing lewd pictures and shooting spitballs, and the one who suggests skipping gym and going behind the equipment shed to smoke cigarettes.

The Best Friend/Confidant- Spencer Tracy

There’s something about Spence that inspires trust. Sure, he had an affair for nigh 30 years, but, hey, he didn’t divorce his wife! Spence’d be the one who would be a bit of everything: Wild and rebellious, yet sensible, trustworthy and fun. He’d be the guy that everyone in the gang would consider their best friend and the one who would be everyone’s first stop when faced with a problem, and he’d be the one who you could always rely on.

  1. A SISSY CLIQUE!?!? All you boys would be just dying to get a piece of this so-called “sissy clique”! Meanie.

It’s okay that you “politely pilfered” my idea :)You did a much more fantastic job! I was dying!

The passage on Lord Olly was my favorite 😉

  2. 1. We’d all ask out members of your clique as our prom dates 😉

    2. *blushes* they were equally good 🙂

    3. I thought you might! I even referenced you hehehe

  3. 1. Yay, for being the the best-looking people to ever go to a prom! I still didn’t find a dress btw 😦 I’m the only one of my friends who didn’t get one yet.

    2. AND CARY GRANT IS NOT QUEER!!!

  4. 1. Go with the slacks! Heppy would be proud!

    2. I know my dear, I was making reference to the numerous accusations of homosexuality thrown at him since his death. Although…he did live with Randolph Scott an awful long time…

    Mark

    March 2, 2011 at 2:41 am

  5. 1. But Heppy ain’t my date! CLARK=MINE.

    2. How could I forget…what do you think about the whole Randolph Scott thing?

    Carole Irene

    March 2, 2011 at 9:30 am

    • 1. I know that peach, but for your upcoming prom 🙂

      2. I’m not sure… The biography I read implied quite strongly that they were a couple. It also made a pretty convincing case that they were very jealous of each other’s wives while they were still living together. Apparently Cary shacked up with Orry-Kelly for a while in the late ’20s.
I guess we’ll never know if he was gay or bi-sexual. I sort of get the feeling that maybe he was bi, but that’s just me. It doesn’t really matter in the long run though. All that matters that he was brilliant!

2a. I don’t believe that Gabe ever had any homosexual experiences though. Nor Errol Flynn.

      Mark

      March 2, 2011 at 10:48 am

  6. 1. Peach? That’s a new one!

    2. Which bio did you read?I just can’t see Cary that way!

    2a. That’s all shit, don’t believe it!

    Carole Irene

    March 2, 2011 at 3:37 pm

  7. 1. It sure is cherry blossom!

    2. “Cary Grant: A Biography” by Marc Eliot. It’s very interesting 🙂

2a. Gabe was a man’s man! And who claimed that Errol was gay? DAVID EFFING BRET

  9. 1. 😀

    2. It’s very interesting!

2a. Let’s hunt him down and beat him up!

    Mark

    March 3, 2011 at 11:18 am

  10. 1. You should call me watermelon. It’s more fitting.

    2. Still need to search it!

    3. Yeah! I love beating people up! Just kidding.

    Carole Irene

    March 3, 2011 at 12:53 pm

  11. 1. Coz you’re sweet 😀

    2. It kind of treads the line between a good, objective biography and one of THOSE biographies.

    3. It’d be a pleasure to beat him up!

    Mark

    March 3, 2011 at 3:17 pm

  12. 1. Because I’m round

    2. Mixing fact with shit? Don’t believe it!

    3. I’d do it with relish!

  13. 1. You’re very self-deprecating 😦

    2. I dunno…he makes a pretty strong case…

    3. I’d do it with mustard *howls*

    Mark

    March 4, 2011 at 10:50 am

  14. 1. I’m really sorry that you saw that side of me. I’ve always had serious problems with my self-esteem 😦 and problems with friends and family just take it from bad to worse. Classic movies help me to get away from it all.

    2. I really need to read the bio for myself then.

    3. And i’d do it with pepper spray!!!

    Carole Irene

    March 4, 2011 at 11:29 am

  15. 1. I think you’re wonderful! I would be proud to call you my friend, indeed, I AM proud to call you a friend. You’re one of perhaps 4 people I really enjoy talking to!

    2. You won’t like it!

    3. And then we could invoke Gabe and Errol’s spirits to kick his ass!

    Mark

    March 4, 2011 at 1:57 pm

  16. 1. *blushing, feeling better* you’re one of…five I like to talk to. But you’re number one with my sister!

    2. It doesn’t seem like it 😦

    3. We’d kick it to a PULP. Sorry, I’m gross.

    Carole Irene

    March 4, 2011 at 4:07 pm

  17. 1. *blushes also* I think I’ll move to Brooklyn! I’ll get a job in a convenience store and live in a flea trap apartment, but it won’t even matter coz I’ll be able to chat with you each and every day!

    2. Maybe it’s time for some good, old-fashioned, book burnin’!

    3. Someone with a pulped ass would look hilarious 😀

    MarkGable

    March 4, 2011 at 7:31 pm

  18. 1. But I want to move to LA when I’m older! And all the apartments here are fleatraps 🙂

    2. Hurray!

    3. I know, I’d die laughing 😀

    Carole Irene

    March 5, 2011 at 12:50 am

  19. 1. LA would be too expensive peaches!

1a. It wouldn’t matter one bit if I had every-day access to the Dizzy Dame conversation!

    Mark

    March 5, 2011 at 9:39 am

  20. 1. But what if I make a lot of money?

1a. Don’t you already have access to the Dizzy Dame conversation 😉

    Carole Irene

    March 5, 2011 at 10:16 am

  21. 1. Then everything will be PEACHy keen!

1a. Yes and it’s wonderful, but personal conversation would be perfection!

    Mark

    March 5, 2011 at 1:25 pm

  22. 1. Haha, clever! Why do you call me peach btw?(not complaining at all, I love it and I think it’s adorable!)

1a. I know, I wish we can talk face to face!

    Carole Irene

    March 5, 2011 at 1:32 pm

  23. 1. I’m not sure 🙂 you just seem like a cutie pie and peaches are cute 🙂

    1a. Same 😦

    2. MOGAMBO IS ON TV!

    Mark

    March 5, 2011 at 4:47 pm

    2. 😀 😀 don’t you love it when you find great stuff like that by chance?

    Carole Irene

    March 5, 2011 at 9:26 pm

  25. 1. You sure do blush a lot 🙂 dear li’l dame!

    2. Yes 😀 my dad was watching it. He even said “that’s what you’ll look like when you’re older I think” when Gabe was on 😀

    Mark

    March 5, 2011 at 10:55 pm

  26. 1. You make me!

    2. Oh my God! *hugs phone in lieu of hugging you* You should be proud of yourself!

    Carole Irene

    March 6, 2011 at 1:31 am

  27. 1. Just wait until I meet you and compliment you in person 😉

    2. *feels special*

    Mark

    March 6, 2011 at 1:42 am

  28. 1. Hopefully I’ll learn to control myself before then!

    2. You are special 🙂

    Carole Irene

    March 6, 2011 at 5:03 am

  29. 1. I’ll just do something like kiss your nose and you’ll blush!

    2. And you’re wonderful!

    Mark

    March 6, 2011 at 12:38 pm

  30. 1. Aw man kisses make all dames blush! No kissing!
    2. STOP IT!!! My face is getting hot!

    Carole Irene

    March 7, 2011 at 2:28 am

  31. 1. I know a couple of fellas that could kiss a nun and the nun wouldn’t blush. Great fellas, but as homely as a pig snout!

    2. *winks like Gabe does in the church*

    Mark

    March 7, 2011 at 2:40 am

  32. 1. If they’re homely, that’s why the nuns don’t blush 😉 if you kiss them, lug, they’d fry! My sister told me that the tip of my nose looks like Myrna Loy’s 😀 but I think she’s humoring me 😦 my friends tell me my nose is really pointy, and I personally think my nose looks like a messed-up version of Jean’s. It’s funny how no one knows what the hell it looks like lmao

    2. *passes out from too much compliments and subsequent blushing* remember what I said about never fainting? I remembered that I fainted once, after some bloodwork 😦

    Carole Irene

    March 7, 2011 at 4:45 am

  33. 1. My Momma has a pointy nose and she’s the most beautiful woman ever in my opinion 🙂

1a. My nose is like Gabe’s exactly 🙂

1b. I have to admit, I picture you as looking like Myrna 🙂

    2. That’s ok, I’ve fainted… 5 times

    Mark

    March 7, 2011 at 7:28 am

  34. 1. My mommy has a pointy nose too! 😀
1a. Oh gosh that’s adorable! I LOVE his nose! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! It’s so…skinny and it goes down a little at the point. I can’t describe it but I love it and it’s so freaking cute! I’m so sorry but I’m going to be touching your nose endlessly when you come. It’s an involuntary reflex 😀
    1b. I don’t think I really look like anyone so much 😦 it’s more like a mix of a zillion actresses 🙂
    2. That’s a lot! From what, may I ask?

    Carole Irene

    March 7, 2011 at 8:16 am

  35. 1. 😀 maybe they’re long lost sisters!

    1a. That’s ok 🙂 it’d be funny!

1b. Oh gosh I can’t wait to see you!

    2. Honey, you can ask me anything you like! Ummm, let’s see… The first time I can’t really think of why, the second was heat, third was heat, fourth was chain-smoking in very hot weather and fifth was dehydration.

    Mark

    March 7, 2011 at 5:06 pm

  36. 1. Then we’d be cousins! 😉
1a. And you want to kiss my nose! You won’t be able to see your own nose, let alone get at mine! 😀
    2. You seem sensitive to heat, my lug! Wait a sec, I actually fainted twice. The other time was because…don’t kill me…I wasn’t eating.

    Carole Irene

    March 8, 2011 at 3:35 am

  37. 1. We’re too alike 🙂

1a. I’d just strike when you least expected it!

    2. Why would I kill you my peach? It would be to kill part of myself!

2a. Why weren’t you eating if I might ask?

    Mark

    March 8, 2011 at 7:56 am

  38. 1. We’re too alike to be cousins or so alike that we should be cousins?
1a. I’ll always be on my guard 😉
    2. I was kidding, my darling. I’m quite touched by your comment!
2a. Well, the same reason many fourteen year old girls don’t eat.

    Carole Irene

    March 8, 2011 at 10:30 am

  39. 1. We’re too alike in general 🙂 it’s just wonderful 🙂

1a. I’ll kiss your nose if it’s the last thing I do!

    2. *beams* you’re too cute!

2a. Oh *throws arms around you and holds you* but you beat it and I am so proud of you 🙂

    Mark

    March 8, 2011 at 11:21 am

  40. 1. It’s such a relief to know that there is someone like me out there!
1a. I’m going to wear those surgical mask things that the Chinese wore during the swine flu scare 😉
    2. *hides face so you don’t see the blush*
    2a. *beams with happiness*

    Carole Irene

    March 8, 2011 at 12:32 pm

  41. 1. Perhaps we are part of some sort of super-human program!

1a. People were wearing those here too!

    2. You’re going to get a permanent blush 😀

2a. You should be happy, and very proud of yourself. So many people have their lives torn apart by what you went through. But you beat it, and that makes you strong 🙂 Gabe and the Golden Age Gang would be as proud as you as I am 🙂

    Mark

    March 8, 2011 at 1:11 pm

  42. 1. After WWII, I don’t think so! We just have very cultured brains 🙂
1a. They’re STILL wearing them! Not as much as before, but every once in a while you see an old Chinese lady wearing one 😛
    2. God forbid!
2a. You’ve given me the permanent blush!

    Carole Irene

    March 8, 2011 at 1:38 pm

  43. 1. Maybe we were bred before WWII…it explains our sense of despair at this world 🙂

1a. The poor old things probably have no idea that the threat is over!

    2. 😉 😀

2a. Hahaha and my scheme is complete 😛 but there’s a semi-pal has a permanent blush from playing the trumpet 😀

    Mark

    March 8, 2011 at 4:54 pm

  44. 1. Well, yes if course!
    1a. Aww, probably not!
    2. 😦 😦 😦
2a. So all those fantastic words were false, part of a scheme to make me blush? What a scoundrel you are!
2b, HAHAHA!!! Did he break a couple of blood vessels playing that thing too hard? 😉

    Carole Irene

    March 8, 2011 at 6:13 pm

  45. 1. It…it all makes sense now…

1a. That or they’re hygiene enthusiasts!

2 and 2a. No, I meant every word, but I thought I’d chain-compliment you for extra effect!

    3. Yes hahaha!

    Mark

    March 8, 2011 at 6:59 pm

  46. 1. I finally figured out the confusion of my mind!! 😀
1a. No not really. They smell 😦
    2 and 2a. You’re incorrigible.
    3. 😛

    Carole Irene

    March 8, 2011 at 11:59 pm

  47. 1. I wonder what we were programmed to do 😮

    1a. Behehehehehehehe!!!

    2. You better believe it! 😉

    3. We all used to snigger at him

    Mark

    March 9, 2011 at 2:04 am

    Carole Irene

    March 9, 2011 at 4:54 am

    Mark

    March 9, 2011 at 12:55 pm

  50. 1. *cue superhero music*
1a. Maybe they wear those masks so they won’t have to smell themselves 😉
    2. Aw shucks!
    3. I would! But if it gets too bad, I might have to feign a stomachache and run away!

    Carole Irene

    March 9, 2011 at 3:36 pm

  51. 1. I might have to write a post chronicling our adventures!

    Mark

  68. 1. None of your never ending list of girlfriends ever showed interest on your nose?! 😮

    2. That gave me the giggles, I dunno why!

    Carole Irene

    March 12, 2011 at 5:12 pm

  69. 1. Hahaha! Never ending list! Nope, they didn’t though. Though they didn’t know who Gabe was!

    2. Probably because it was a victory that you hadn’t expected 😛

    Mark

    March 12, 2011 at 6:57 pm

  70. 1. Oh, that’s just wrong.

    2. Maybe. But that usually makes me mad! 😉

    Carole Irene

    March 13, 2011 at 4:33 am

  71. 1. Even if they did, they probably wouldn’t have cared 😦 it’s all about the Zac Efron pretty boy wimps.

    2. It makes me leap in the air and sing “kalloo kallay oh happy day!”

    Mark

    March 13, 2011 at 5:02 am

  72. 1. You know who’s getting on my nerves? Justin Beiber 😡

    Carole Irene

    Mark

    March 22, 2011 at 6:14 am

  117. Well, it’s her home and her family, so I shouldn’t be snagging all the attention. And you have a six year old cousin? What’s her name?

    2. Gosh, these little girls! My cousin May carries a little Louis Vuitton bag, has a designer wardrobe bigger than mine, has a cell phone and laptop (she’s six or seven I can’t remember) is spiteful, demanding, abusive…she’s a terror! She’s the one who had the clown at her birthday party 😉 She also had another birthday party that was princess-themed, and she wore a ball gown and entered in a carriage and all that jazz. It was like one of those spoiled brat birthday parties you see on TV.

  158. Austin the beagle is my favorite. He’s so old and chubby 🙂 the other one, Chip, is a cutie but he lounges about in front of the window in the living room and barks at anyone who walks past. The neighbors across the street have this white cat that they let wander around and little Chip absolutely hates it! Austin is an outside dog, but Chip loves going outside with him. Just tonight we made them up a nice warm bed near the backyard door because it’s quite cold, and Chip went and snuggled with Austin. It was so cute. My sister was bawling!

    Mark

    April 3, 2011 at 2:50 pm

  163. But I do it naturally! I’m so immature 😦 And it really doesn’t take a lot to annoy your sister, doesn’t it? 🙂
